The Academy Awards are a yearly program where members of the Academy of Art and Science vote on superlatives in various categories of films. Commonly known as the Oscars, they have been going on since 1928.

The host for the 2008 Oscars was Jon Stewart.

Categories include;

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director
  • Best Actor
  • Best Actress
  • Best Adapted/Original Screenplay
  • Best Sound
  • Best Sound Effects
  • Best Visual Effects
  • Best Live-Action Short
  • Best Animated Short
  • Best Original Song
  • Best Original Score
  • Best Foreign Language Film
  • Best Costume
  • Best Make-Up
  • Best Supporting Actor
  • Best Supporting Actress
  • Best Documentary Feature
  • Best Animated Feature

The category for Best Animated Feature was not introduced until 2001. This is understandable, yet unfortunate, because there is a small number of animated films that was nominated for Best Picture; the first being Beauty And The Beast (1991), but no other cartoon received the nomination until UP (2009) came out, 8 years after the introduction of Best Animated Feature. Toy Story 3 became the third animated feature to receive the Best Picture nomination.

Gregory Peck, who was president of the Academy Awards during the late-sixties, once and rightly campaigned for The Jungle Book (a cartoon) to receive a Best Picture nomination. However the other associates of the Academy Awards decided against the idea of a cartoon to receive such a nomination (hypocrites!). Plus the production of animated features was rising year by year since the sixties. Yet it's surprising that the category for Best Animated Features did not commence during that period rather than so late.
