An Astronomical unit or AU is defined as the average distance between the Earth and the Sun. That is approximately 150 million kilometers or 93 million miles.

Distances in the Universe and even in the Solar System are so vast large units of measurement work better than miles of kilometers. The astronomical unit is used mainly for measuring distances in the Solar system. [1]
