Athens has been an important city since ancient times. Early on it appears kings ruled Athens but later the Athenians developed the first partial Democracy. Athens was a partial democracy because slaves, foreigners and women couldn’t vote. Foreigners included people whose ancestors had been in Athens for generations. Those who could vote decided policy by Direct democracy, they met and took decisions on government.
Today Athens is a thriving modern city and part of a Representative democracy which Greece is. Archaeological remains from ancient Athens are an important tourist attraction.
