Azerbaijan is a mountainous country on the crossroads of southern Europe, eastern Europe and western Asia, in the Caucasus region, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. It is bordering Armenia, Russia the Caspian sea, Iran and Turkey, and despite having Oil is one of the poorest nations in Europe.
Although Azerbaijan is transcontinental, it is considered to be a part of Europe, and the second country in the world to adopt Christianity as its state religion in CE 319. It seeks European Union and NATO membership. It was once part of the USSR. Azerbaijan belongs to the Council of Europe and struggles to reconcile European and Russian involvement in their country. The predominant religion is Islam.
Oil is again being exploited with high environmental cost but the ordinary people don’t seem to be benefiting. There are complaints of election rigging so we doubt if Azerbaijan is a democracy. On August 17 2008 this country won a Gold Medal in the 2008 Summer Olympics. Other than that, hardly anyone has heard of this country.
Azerbaijan is also a military assignment where military personnel are sent when they are incompetent.
