The Baltic Sea is one of the planet’s largest bodies of brackish water. It is composed of salt water from the North East Atlantic and fresh water from rivers and streams draining from an area four times larger than the Sea itself. This highly sensitive and interdependent marine ecosystem gives rise to unique flora and fauna. [1]
An increasing lack of oxygen at the bottom of the Baltic Sea is causing animal and plant life to die, with parts of the Gulf of Finland seabed resembling a desert. [2]
The Baltic Sea is the Sea between Central Europe and Northern Europe. Scandinavia borders the Baltic. Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Germany all share the Baltic coast.
