A Car is an automotive device invented in the 1890s which became ubiquitous in the USA during the 1920s, and many other countries as people have come to be able to afford them. With old cars you had to crank the engine, and this was annoying. Most cars remained very ugly until the late 1990s. Cars usually have four wheels, and their acceleration is measured in horsepower (hp) with 1 hp being a horse drawn carriage. Most modern cars have at least 150 HP.

Cars and the environmentEdit

Cars give out a range of damaging pollutants, toxins like lead, Carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide have been reduced or eliminated in recent decades. But they produce far more carbon dioxide than most other forms of transport, and this adds to Global warming.

Cars based societies are known for carnage on the roads, with millions of people having been killed in 20th Century car crashes and more injured, sometimes permanently disabled.

At its most extreme car based societies wind up ruining people's heath and contributing to a US style epidemic of childhood obesity and general obesity.

Alternatives to carsEdit

People are encouraged to use public transport instead of cars. People are further advised to walk for short journeys. People who are young and fit may enjoy cycling. Motor Cycles produce less emissions, car sharing schemes can also reduce the number of cars on the road.
