Charity was original defined as altruistically helping those in need. In modern life, this is mostly performed by individuals or companies sending money to specific foundations.

In many countries, including the USA, donations to some charities are "tax-deductible" -- that is, reduce the amount of tax to be paid. While this benefits both companies and charities, some Conservatives use this to launder illegal funds to candidates tax free.
