Many churches are very beautiful and clearly a great deal of work and money went into constructing, decorating and maintaining them. In mediaeval Europe for example rich elaborate churches were built of stone when poor people lived in miserable hovels. Nobody asked if the resources would have been better used cultivating the land and producing food for starving mediaeval peasants, few asked if the resources would have been better used building better houses for poor people living in leaking shacks.
A church can also be the name of a sect of Christianity, such as the Lutherian Church or Mormon Church.
