Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell

A dystopia is the opposite of a utopia; it is a community that is undesirable.  A dystopia would have a totalitaria government, environmental disasters, and utter chaos.

The word is Greek for a bad place.  The word was coined in the book Utopia by Thomas More in 1516.

Most dystopian governments mightd have planned economies or are states run by Corporations.  The ruler of the country would be hedonistic and selfish and rules with an iron fist.
