Election day, in the United States of America, is the day (usually on even numbered years) when less than half of the citizens get together to decide what color the place they live should be painted. It usually falls on either November 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th, though sometimes people throw random elections in at weird times. Those elections are usually called special.
Anyways, once everyone (a minority) has picked what color their home should be on the map, a candidate who has pasted his or her (usually his) name on everything he or she could get his or her hands on in the past few months gets picked for an office based on his or her favorite color.
Usually people pick between Red (the color of blood) and Blue (better than red, but not really that liberal), because everyone has agreed that Black is a too cool color and no one is allowed to vote for it.
