Elitism is the concept that some people should have more influence over others, regarding elements such as their age, intelligence or financial strength. Elites exist and elites based on ability are needed. Liberals are concerned about equality and try to limit the extent and power of elites.
Elitism and democracyEdit
Representative democracy has an element of elitism but voters choose the elites who govern them for a set period and rulers face periodic re-election. Elected rulers can be corrupted by power and frequently are. The need for periodic re-election and the dependence of rulers on those who elect them hopefully limits the problem.
