Erwin "The Desert Fox" Rommel was a German field marshal. He did serious damage to the French during the fall of France, and later the British for some time in North Africa. He is most famous for his command of the Afrika Korps, and for his role in the unsuccessful assassination attempt against Hitler.
He was the German commander in Normandy in 1944, but the allies managed to land on a day when he was away on leave.
He is considered the epitome of a German career officer in WWII - fighting in accordance with the rules of war. After his role in the bomb plot was discovered he chose suicide over a trial and execution.
