Faggot is also an older word used in American English to refer to a burning piece of wood, or a bundle of wood. A faggot can also mean a bundle of sticks (link). Faggot in this sense had almost the same meaning as firebrand, but was used to describe overt or flamboyant homosexuals who did not hide their homosexuality from "straight" society, and/or advocated for rights to practice a homosexual lifestyle. This use of the word Faggot may also be the basis of the modern use of the word Flaming, as an adjective to describe overt or flamboyant homosexual behavior.
A shortened-version of this word, fag, means the same as above, although is it a slang for "cigarette" in British English. In some places, a fag can also mean a person who is a jerk. Vehicle drivers sometimes use this word toward other drivers who "cut them off".
