GNU is a Unix-like Operating System. GNU stands for GNU's Not Unix, implying that, while GNU is similar to the original Unix in many aspects, it doesn't use the same code.

Unlike most Unix OSes at the time, it was being developed under a free software license, to ensure everyone would be free to modify and share it. The GNU project was launched by Richard Stallman. GNU's kernel GNU Hurd is still incomplete so it uses the Linux kernel. (As a result, many call the whole OS "Linux", not even knowing that they use GNU programs, too).
