Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell

George Orwell was a British writer and the writer of Animal Farm as well as 1984. Orwell was known for his belief in democratic socialism. Orwell hated Stalinism.

Orwell's books attacked both Communists and Conservatives and showed the similarities in both systems: the rich control everything and the poor are weak, and war is something that happens regularly. Sound familiar? It's not clear what Orwell's religious beliefs were but he was suspicious of organised religion.

As long as supernatural beliefs persist, men can be exploited by cunning priests and oligarchs, and the technical progress which is the prerequisite of a just society cannot be achieved. [1]
