Hispaniola second largest island of the West Indies, (...) between Cuba and Puerto Rico. Haiti occupies the western third of the island and the Dominican Republic the remainder. Visited by Columbus in 1492, the island was called Española. Hispaniola is an Island in the Caribbean Sea which is now divided into the Dominican Republic and Haiti. It's believed the original name of Española was changed to the more English name, Hispaniola.  There is a strong contrast between relative Economic success in the Dominican Republic and Poverty in Haiti.
