Istanbul is the capital of Turkey. It has had many names in the past, most notably Byzantium, Constantinople and Stamboul. Constantinople used to be the capital of the eastern branch of the Roman Empire and a Christian centre. Today Istanbul like the rest of Turkey is predominately Muslim.
