James Abram Garfield was the 20th President of the United States. He was born in 1831 in Ohio in a poor family. and lost his father aged 2. As an adult Garfield earned the money to pay for his own education. It's much harder for poor kids to succeed but a few manage it if you are poor don't give up.
Garfield detested Slavery and fought on the side of the Union in the Civil War, he reached the rank of major general. After the war Garfield believed southern plantations should be broken up and given to the former slaves who had worked there, unfortunately that didn't happen. Garfield left the military when he was elected to represent Ohio in Congress. He served in Congress for 18 years.
