A Lake is a large body of Water unconnected to any Sea or Ocean. Most lakes contain fresh water but a few are salt lakes.

If it's natural it's more likely to be a lake, an artificial body of water is more likely to be called a pond or a reservoir. If it's big it's more likely to be called a lake.
