Macedonia is a parliamentary democracy in the Balkan area of Southern Europe. It was part of Former Yugoslavia, which was a Communist Dictatorship. Macedonia has a history of far too many wars, the latest being a Civil War in 1991 which happened because the ethnic Albanians didn’t like the Macedonian majority. The war ended when NATO supervised a peace settlement giving the Albanians considerable autonomy. As with most former Communist countries the Macedonian economy is growing steadily but the country is still poor. Macedonia has applied to join the European Union and NATO.
