Muntadhar al-Zaidi is an Iraqi journalist who works for Iraqi-owned television station, Al-Baghdadia. He often reports on the plight of the Iraqi people under the US-led occupation. On 16 November, 2007, al-Zaidi was kidnapped while walking to work by unknown men. He was released three days later. He has also been arrested twice by US forces.
Al-Zaidi gained world fame after throwing his shoes at US President George W. Bush. After that, he was detained and sent to prison. The arrest caused an uproar to arise amongst the Iraqi people, who continued to call for his release.
Rumours have arisen that Al-Zaidi was initially tortured when arrested.
