"But what exactly does objectivity mean? Is it a matter of following the right procedures when doing an experiment or making an observation? Or is it an attribute of the person doing science, something like emotional detachment or freedom from personal bias? Or is it something to do with making contact with things "out there" in the world of reality?"-
Very many people and organizations on the left and the right imagine they are objective when they aren't or pretend they are objective when they aren't. A good way to start being really objective would be to do some research on all (or most) possible sides and look for what each side is trying to hide. Of course, there may be quite a bit of trouble with that.
