The Olympics is a major multi sport event which is held every four years in a different city. It's split into summer and winter varieties which are held two years apart. The original Olympics games were held on a regular basis for around 1000 years in ancient Greece; the original Games were held in Olympia (a valley in Greece). In these ancient games only the winners were heroes, anybody who did not win would be shamed, which means most people who took part would end up shamed, no matter how close they were to winning.
The first modern Olympics was held in 1896 in Athens. The event has since grown in to a major event, for any major city winning the Olympics is now considered a great prize, and the selection process is dogged by rumors of bribery and corruption.
The Ancient Olympic Games Edit
Went on from 776-BCE to 322-CE, had mostly 5 events (but more were added later):
- Pankration (no-rules wrestling)
- Chariot racing
- Discus throw
- Javelin throw
The Modern Olympic Games Edit
There are many participants in the modern Olympic games, and most nations of the world are represented. Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals are given to the participants who come first second and third in each event.
