There is more of a campaign over Dirty Gold than there is over dirty silver, still but similar problems exist with gold, silver, platinum and other metals, the more responsible jewelers are trying to do something, but not all are responsible. More than half of newly mined silver is a by-product of mining for other metals such as copper, gold and zink. Mining for precious metals and ordinary metals can damage environments, sometimes pristine environments where Endangered species are found. Toxic chemicals used to extract precious metals from ore can be left to poison Human and animal life, the poison, cyanide can be used. Those who want to buy gold, silver or jewelry based on precious metals should research first where the metals come from.
We can't avoid using ordinary metals like copper but we can avoid buying cheap metal trinkets that we throw away after a short time. We can try and limit our use of metals to what we need.
