Slovakia is a democratic landlocked nation in Central Europe. It is part of the European Union and NATO. It joined the Eurozone in 2009. It has a population of over five million. Slovakia neighbours Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic.
Most Americans (generally ones who are Conservative) do not know that Slovakia exists and refers to the area incorrectly as Czechoslovakia. That is incorrect as Czechoslovakia peacefully split in 1993, two years after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The nation was freed from Communist rule in 1989, during which it was still a part of Czechoslovakia. It officially split from the Czech Republic in 1993.
Slovakia is a democratic republic with a multi-party system, meaning that more then just two voices are heard in the government. The head of state is the president who is elected by popular vote to a five year term. Most executive power lies with the Prime Minister who is always the leader of the winning party. Most of the time a coalition between multiple parties is needed for one faction to gain control of Parliament. Their are currently six parties in Slovakia that are in parliament. By far the most powerful is the Social Democracy Party, which has a third of all parliament seats and is a party that advocates Socialism and Populism. Conservatives in the Slovakia are generally angry right wingers, who hate the nation's steps towards progress. Thankfully the largest of them, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union keeps decreasing in the polls.
Unfortunately there is a National Socialist party with support in Slovakia, the Slovak National Party. It is a lot like the American Republican Party as it has made statements against homosexuals and anyone who isn't the ethnicity they are. Plus they are neo-fascist and ultra-nationalist. Thankfully they only have 20 seats compared to the 50 of the Social Democracy party.
