The Southern Ocean is the area of water or Ocean that's nearest to the South Pole. It's also called the Antarctic Ocean. Antarctica is at the South Pole but the Southern Ocean flows round Antarctica. It has been agreed internationally to call this area of water an ocean but some geographers prefer to divide the water round Antarctica up between the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Indian Ocean. The Southern Ocean is smaller than the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans but it's bigger than the Arctic Ocean at the North Pole.
A great many Whales spend a large part of the year there.
