Sri Lanka is an island nation to the south of India that used to be called Ceylon. Sri Lanka has suffered Civil war between the Tamils who live in the Northeast of the Island, speak Tamil and are mostly Hindus and the Sinhalese speaking Buddhists who are the majority in Sri Lanka.

The Tamils are descended from people brought over from India by the British to work on their tea plantations.

Ceylon was part of the British Empire and had previously been a Dutch colony.

Amnesty International and the European Union both are concerned over Human rights in Sri Lanka.
