Virginia has a long and interesting history with the United States of America. It started out as a British colony, and was named after Mary, the "Virgin Queen." When pronounced by an Australian, however, it sounds like "Vagina." For this reason, it is not recommended for Australians to travel to this commonwealth. That's right, Virginia is technically not a state, but a commonwealth. But who cares, we'll just refer to it as a state like the other 49.
In an attempt to stop the march of time and return to the Middle Ages, Virginia joined the Confederate States in seceding from the Union in 1861. Richmond, Virginia, was selected as the capital of the Confederate States, which is located less than 100 miles south of Washington, DC. See Civil War of America
Since then, it has somewhat redeemed itself by bringing an end to Racism and creating a notable city or two. And in 2008 Virginia witnessed a transition from being a Red state to a more moderate one when it was won by Barack Obama over John McCain in the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election. It could not have been done without the help of Northern Virginia, the breadbasket part of the state.
