Wedge issues are political issues which Conservatives focus on as a means of dividing potential majority coalitions. From one perspective, only 1% of the American electorate is extremely wealthy, yet they manage to consistently advance their agenda. The way they do this is "divide and conquer". National debate is steered to issues which divide us. News coverage is heavily focused on the emotionally divisive and away from the emotionally uplifting and unifying. These divisive issues are called "wedge issues" because they are used to drive us further apart.
